Program Mission
By providing free and low-cost lessons through our scholarship program, UpBeat hopes to open up the possibility of music education to those who might not be able to afford it otherwise. We are proud to make music education more accessible and our vision is to provide all Chicago-area youths the opportunity to experience and be inspired through the arts.
We believe it's important to have a robust scholarship program. All of our staff have experienced and seen first-hand the impact that music can have on a person’s life — from creating life-long friends to learning self-confidence and expressing creativity, learning to play music can change lives. For those who do not have access to music lessons or an arts education, accessing UpBeat’s inspiring community could be life-changing.
Program details
Music Lessons
Students receive free or low-cost lessons to ensure that they can get a music education which they might not otherwise be able to afford. An arts education has been found to improve scholastic outcomes and cognitive functions. If the student doesn’t have an instrument, UpBeat may be able to provide a loaner instrument.
Mentorship
Teachers take the time to speak with each student about how they’re doing in life and school. Beyond teaching music, UpBeat teachers want to ensure the success of their students.
Professional and Skill Development
Board members, staff, and friends of the organization provide workshops in which students are taught professional and life skills, such as how to interview, how to write an email, and how to tell your story. Whether students are going to college or beginning their career, having these life skills is invaluable.
Internship Opportunities
UpBeat provides students the opportunity to gain work experience as a front desk intern, studio intern, summer camp intern, and more.
These internships provide some scholarship students the opportunity to gain work experience, make money, and get references for when they start applying to colleges or jobs.
Performance Opportunities
Scholarship students have the opportunity to perform at end-of-session performances. Additionally, students in ensembles get the opportunity to perform at other UpBeat events throughout the year, including fundraisers and other gatherings.
